Is Tramadol Effective For Treating Pain and What Else Should I Be Aware Of?

New studies show that patients who have knee osteoarthritis can improve their symptoms by taking an extended-release tablet of tramadol (Ultram) once per day. The medication seems to reduce chronic pain for patients.

A recent trial involved 246 patients with knee osteoarthritis. The individuals were at least 50 years old, and they all experienced stiffness in the morning. Tramadol ER was given at a dose of 100 mg once a day. It was increased later to 200 mg once a day. When it was needed, doses of 300 or 400 mg was given. The average dose that was given was 275 mg per day. The study shows that there was a decrease in the pain intensity and disability was improved.

Over 90 percent of adverse events were rated mild to moderate in severity. However, the adverse events were significantly greater for patients that took tramadol ER compared to a placebo. These side effects included vomiting, nausea, fatigue and dizziness. However, researchers do not know how tramadol compares to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, codeine and other medications that are used to treat pain. In addition, researchers for this particular study stated that people that experience pain should make changes to their diet and lifestyle. They should seek less expensive treatments for their pain like glucosamine, acetaminophen, and propoxyphene napsylate (Darvocet).

Is Tramadol an Anti-Inflammatory Medication?

Tramadol is not an anti-inflammatory medication, it is a synthetic analgesic. As a result, if you cannot take anti-inflammatory medications, you may be able to take tramadol. Tramadol may be used to treat moderate or severe pain. It may also be used to prevent pain.

How Can I Store Tramadol?

You can store tramadol at room temperature and keep it away from lights and heat.

What Else Is Tramadol Used For?

Tramadol is used to treat pain and most types of neuralgia. In addition, tramadol may be helpful for treating symptoms of depression, phobias and anxiety. However, professionals have not endorsed it for treating these kinds of disorders. It may be used if other medications and treatments have failed to work.

Tramadol must be used under control of a doctor or psychiatrist. You should never take this medication without your doctor knowing about it. You may not be able to take tramadol if you take certain medications, if you are addicted to drugs or alcohol, or if you have certain medical conditions because the result could be life-threatening or fatal.
